  1. A bag contains 3 blue balls, 5 yellow balls and 4 green balls. 3 balls are drawn at random. What is the probability that exactly 1 ball is yellow in color?
    A) 23/44
    B) 21/44
    C) 18/33
    D) 19/22
    E) None of these
    B) 21/44
    Explanation:
    From 5 yellow balls, ways for 1 ball is 5C1 = 5
Other 2 balls are either blue or green, so from 7 blue+green balls, ways for 2 balls is 7C2 = 7*6/2*1 = 21
    There are a total of 12 balls. Ways for drawing 3 balls is 12C3 = 12*11*10/3*2*1 = 220
    So required prob. = (5*21)/220 = 21/44

  2. The average of first eight results is 64 and that of last eight is 84. Find the ninth result, if the average of all 17 results is 66.
    A) 72
    B) 66
    C) 62
    D) 58
    E) 56
    C) 62
    Explanation:
    Total of 17 results = 17*66 = 1122
    Total of first eight results = 8*64 = 512
    Total of last eight results = 8*84 = 672
    So 9th result will be (512+672) – (1122) = 62

  3. A sum of Rs 3600 is invested in two parts. One part at 8% for 5 years and the remaining part at 4% for 6 years and it was found that the interest on both the parts for respective times and respective rates was same. Find the difference between the two parts.
    A) Rs 900
    B) Rs 870
    C) Rs 960
    D) Rs 875
    E) None of these
    A) Rs 900

    Explanation:
    Interests are equal. So,
    1st part *8*5/100 = 2nd part * 4*6/100
    This gives, 1st part : 2nd part = 3 : 5
    So 1st part = 3/(3+5) * 3600 = 1350
    2nd part = 3600-1350 = 2250
    So diff = 2250 – 1350

  4. 5 chairs costs Rs 450 each, 10 tables Rs 850 each, and 15 sofa sets costs Rs 1650 each. Find the average value of each of the furniture.
    A) Rs 1200
    B) Rs 1180
    C) Rs 1260
    D) Rs 1625
    E) Rs 1090
    B) Rs 1180
    Explanation:
    Average = 5*450 + 10*850 + 15*1650 / 5+10+15 ≈ 1180

  5. A 54 litres mixture contains liquids A and B in the ratio 4 : 5. How much amount of liquid B is to be added so that amount of liquid B is 70% of the new mixture?
    A) 26 l
    B) 20 l
    C) 16 l
    D) 32 l
    E) None of these
    A) 26 l
    Explanation:

    A present in mixture = 4/9 * 54 = 24 l
    B present in mixture = 5/9 * 54 = 30 l
Let x litres of B to be added
B is to be 70% of new mixture, so A is to be 30% of new mixture. So
    30/100 of new mixture = A
    30/100 * (54+x) = 24
    Solve, x = 26 litres

  6. Find the volume of a cube whose surface area is 121 1/2 sq. m.
    A) 91.125 cu. m
    B) 94 cu. m
    C) 87.25 cu. m
    D) 80.275 cu. m
    E) 95.25 cu. m
    A) 91.125 cu. m
    Explanation:
    121 1/2 = 243/2
    6a2 = 243/2
    So a2 = 81/4, a = 9/2
    So volume = 9/2 * 9/2 * 9/2

  7. A, B and C starts a business by investing Rs 5000, Rs 6000 and Rs 6500. After 4 months all of them withdraw Rs 500. Find the ratio in which the total profit will be shared among them at the end of a year.
    A) 18 : 34 : 37
    B) 28 : 34 : 37
    C) 34 : 28 : 37
    D) 16 : 25 : 34
    E) 26 : 37 : 19
    B) 28 : 34 : 37
    Explanation:

    Ratio =
    5000*4 + 4500*8 : 6000*4 + 5500*8 : 6500*4 + 6000*8
    50 + 45*2 : 60 + 55*2 : 65 + 60*2
    140 : 170 : 185

  8. The cost price of an article is Rs 480. Some part of it is sold at 20% loss and the remaining part at some profit%. In this transaction, there is a profit of 5% on the whole. Ratio of the amount of parts sold at 20% loss and some profit% is 1 : 5. Find the profit% on the second part.
    A) 15
    B) 25
    C) 10
    D) 30
    E) None of these
    C) 10
    Explanation:
    Let the profit% be x%.
    By the method of allegation:
    Loss                   profit
    -20                       x
    .            5
    x-5                 5-(-20)=25
    Ratio at 20% loss to x% profit = 1 : 5
    So x-5/25 = 1/5
    Solve, x = 10

  9. A, B and C can complete a piece of work in 10, 12, and 15 days respectively. A and B stated the work and worked for 4 days, after which B left and C joined. Find the number of days in which A and C complete the remaining work.
    A) 2 4/5 days
    B) 2 days
    C) 5 3/5 days
    D) 1 3/5 days
    E) None of these
    D) 1 3/5 days
    Explanation:

    A and B start the work. Their 1 day’s work = 1/10 + 1/12 = 11/60.
    They work for 4 days, so work done by A and B in 4 days = 4 * (11/60) = 11/15
    B left, Remaining work = 1 –(11/15) = 4/15
    (A+C)’s 1 day’s work = 1/10 + 1/15 = 1/6
    A+C completes 1 work in 6 days, so 4/15 work in 6 * (4/15) = 8/5

  10. The present ages of A and B is in the ratio 14 : 17. 5 years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 11 : 13 respectively. Find the sum of their present ages.
    A) 48
    B) 62
    C) 60
    D) 52
    E) None of these
    B) 62
    Explanation:

Let the ages be 14x and 17x respectively, then
    (14x+5)/(17x+5) = 11/13
    Solve, x = 2
    So sum of present ages = 14x + 17x = 31x = 31*2 = 62
