India Post goes high-tech, geo-tags post offices on mobile app called BHUVAN

Indian Postal Department enhanced their services to Hi-tech by geo-tagging the post offices and has started to monitor the timely clearance of the letter boxes through a mobile application.

With the support of the Department of Space, India Post has geo-tagged over 1.5 lakh post offices on the indigenous Geo-Portal called BHUVAN

An Initiative to make use of Department of Space in different sectors

BHUVAN:  india-post

  • A Hindi word which mean Universe
  • Mobile Application developed by ISRO
  • Help people search the nearest post office and know about services and timings
  • Providing visualisation services and earth observation data to users in public domain

History of BHUVAN:

Established in 2009 with simple display of satellite data and basic GIS functionality, now has more than 6,000 map services which are being used under various applications.

Data:

  • Total Post offices: 1.55 Lakh
  • Post offices in Rural Areas: more than 1.39 lakh
  • Post offices Geo-tagged: 1.5 Lakh
  • Remaining Post offices would be geo-tagged

Speeches by PM:

  • Initiative is a part of Collaboration of Dept of Space
  • About 1,50,000 post offices have been geotagged and their exact location on a GIS satellite imagery map along with photograph, services and office timings etc have been made available on the portal

Achievements of India Post:

  • Core banking solution (CBS) for providing anywhere banking has been initiated in 21,319 post offices, covering more than 30 crore Post Office savings bank accounts
  • 910 post office ATMs have been installed across the country
  • A mobile app is being used for monitoring timely clearance of letter boxes in more than 16 cities
