Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan To Be renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan

  • The government has announced that the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan will be renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan in memory of the former president, who passed away on 27 July 2015.
  • Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan is a unique concept developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development that aims to inculcate a spirit of inquiry, creativity and love for Science and Mathematics in school children.Under Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan, the government schools will be mentored by Institutes like IITs/ IIMs/ IISERs and other Central Universities and reputed organisations through innovative programmes, student exchanges, demonstrations, student visits, etc to develop a natural sense of passion towards learning of Science and Maths.

FKCCI completed 100 years of service

  • Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) completed its hundred years of service on 27 July 2015. The Centenary Year Celebrations of FKCCI will be inaugurated by Pranab Mukherjee, President of India
  • The other key annual events of FKCCI include Founders Day Celebration, MANTHAN 2016, Members Day Celebration, Export Excellence Award 2016, FKCCI Innovation Excellence Award 2016 and International Women’s Day.
  • To mark the centenary year celebrations events which include Conference on banking and finance, seminar on Agricultural Produce and Marketing and Food Processing, seminar on Skill Development, networking with District Chambers for development of tier-2 and -3 cities, Business Women Conference, Investors Conference Karnataka government, Awareness campaign on “Make in India” programme, Pacific Asia Travel Association Exhibition and other special events were held

About FKCCI

The chamber was started in 1915 by Bharath Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya to industrialise the then Mysore State. He was ably supported by then ruler of Mysore State Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyars. The federation’s main aim is to resolve the impediments and create harmony leading to economic development of the State.

Sri Lanka signs agreement with Google to launch Project Loon by 2016.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Government of Sri Lanka and search engine giant Google to launch the Google Loon project in the country.
  • Accordding to the MoU, high-speed 3G (3rd Generation) internet services will be provided to the whole country by placing 13 high-altitude balloons over the island nation. Free Wi-Fi connectivity across Sri Lanka is also expected from this project.
  • Sri Lanka will be the first nation in the world to have Internet access covering the whole country with the government support after the successful implementation of this project.

Royal Bengal Tiger population falls rapidly in Sundarbans, Bangladesh

  • Between 2004 and 2015, Bangladesh part of Sundarbans forest observed a gradual decline in the population of tiger. In the 4th week of July 2015, Tiger Census 2015 disclosed this information.
  • According to Tiger Census 2015, tigers in Bangladesh part of the Sundarbans declined sharply from 440 in 2004 to 106 in 2015.
  • The decline was accredited to lack of proper forest management, unchecked wildlife plunder, animal-human conflict in the forest and loss of habitat.
  • Bangladesh-India Joint Tiger Census Project jointly conducted the Tiger Census 2015 and was carried out under Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Wildlife Protection in Asia Project with funding from the World Bank.

Mexico wins 7th Gold Cup title with 3-1 victory over Jamaica

  • Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the final of CONCACAF Gold Cup football tournament to win the regional tournament for the record seventh time. The final was played at Philadelphia, US.
  • Now Mexico will compete with US at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, for CONCACAF’S spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

  • The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the mark tournament of the Caribbean region, North American and Central American. It was established in 1961.
  • CONCACAF stands for Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football. Its members are the nations of three regions and independent nations of Guyana and Suriname and the French department of French Guiana.

Former South Africa cricket captain Clive Rice dies at 66

  • South Africa’s first captain of the post-apartheid era Clive Rice died on Tuesday after battling a brain tumour.
    Career
  • He played in 482 first-class matches for Transvaal, Natal and Nottinghamshire, scoring 26,331 runs at an average of 40.95.
  • He also took 930 wickets at 22.49 apiece before retiring in 1994.

Eminent HIV researcher Dr Suniti Solomon passes away at 76

  • The medical fraternity, scientists and biologists are mourning over the sad demise of India’s most respectable HIV researcher and the President of the AIDS Society of India, Dr. Suniti Solomon. Dr. Solomon, who was ailing from liver cancer, passed away at her residence in Chennai.
  • She was 76 years old and was the first to bring to the world the prevalence of HIV infection in India in 1986. She was also the first one to successfully lead the research into the treatment of HIV infected individuals.
  • Dr. Suniti Solomon earned an M.D in Microbiology from Madras University. She was trained in pathology in the United Kingdom and the United States.
