ii. This feat has been accomplished by a climate-startup named Climeworks by refitting a geothermal plant in Iceland.
iii. In this power plant, Climeworks’ patented air filter captures the carbon dioxide (CO2) from ambient air. Thereafter the low-grade heat from geothermal power plant heats up the filter which results in the extraction of pure CO2.
iv. Extracted CO2 is then bound to water and is sent 700 meters deep into the ground, where it reacts with basaltic bedrock and forms a permanent solid mineral.
v. The CO2 which has thus been embedded in the rock stays there for at least one million years.
