3 state bills of Maharashtra and Gujarat get President’s nod
On September 2, 2018, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to 3 state bills.
i. The 3 state bills are:

  • The Maharashtra Apartment Ownership (Amendment) Bill,
  • The Gujarat Agricultural Lands Ceiling (Amendment) Bill 2015 and
  • The Gujarat Agricultural Lands Ceiling (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

About the Bills:
The Maharashtra Apartment Ownership (Amendment) Bill:
i. The Maharashtra Apartment Ownership (Amendment) Bill will facilitate reconstruction of old buildings, especially in Mumbai.
ii. It would require the consent of 51 percent of the residents.
About The Gujarat Agricultural Lands Ceiling (Amendment) bills 2015 and 2017:
i. They would seek to amend the Agricultural Land Ceiling Act, enacted in 1960.
ii. According to this land unsuitable for farming and lying unused can be given to the industries for expansion.

Gujarat government partners with US advocacy group for ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit
Gujarat Government has partnered with a top India-centric American advocacy group for the 9th edition of ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, the annual industry summit, which will be held from 18th to 20th January 2019 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Key Points:
i. John Chamberschairman of US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF), will lead a high-level CEO delegation to Vibrant Gujarat 2019.
ii. Prior to the summit, USISPF will conduct roadshows in 5 cities: San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, New York and Washington DC in the US. It will also conduct roundtables.
iii. Arvind Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance, government of Gujarat, will lead a senior-level delegation to the US in September 2018. They will meet business leaders, investors, start-ups and incubators, thought leaders and important members of the Indian diaspora.
iv. USISPF has planned cross-sectoral discussions for the delegation with US-based companies in Delhi and Mumbai.
v. Vibrant Gujarat summit was conceptualized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2003 to develop Gujarat as a preferred investment destination in India.

EAM Sushma Swaraj’s 4-day two-nation visit to Vietnam and Cambodia
i. From 27-30 August 2018, External Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj went on a 2 nation ministerial visit to Vietnam and Cambodia.
ii. On August 27, 2018, MEA Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the 16th meeting of the Joint Commission along with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Pham Binh Minh. 
iii. On August 28, 2018, MEA Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the 3rd edition of the Indian Ocean Conference.

Overview of Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu’s Singapore Visit.
i. On August 30-31st, 2018, the 6th RCEP Trade Ministers’ Meeting was held in Singapore. From the Indian side Union Minister of Commerce& Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu  took part in the meeting.
ii. On September 2, 2018, 6th East Asia Summit- Economic Ministers’ Meeting (EAS-EMM) and 15th India-ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting (AEM) was held in Singapore.  
iii. Next ASEAN-India Business Summit will be held  in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in November 2018. The theme of the meeting would be : “Towards Building Strategic Partnership between ASEAN and India in the Era of the 4th IR and Digital Economy” .

India leads growth in international tourism from South Asian region: UN World Tourism Organisation 2017 report
On September 2, 2018, according to a report by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), international tourism hits a record high of 1,323 million international tourist arrivals across the globe in 2017.

UN World Tourism Organisation 2017 reporti. India leads the chart of growth in the South Asian region with a total of 15.54 million in 2017.
According to the report:
i. Tourism is the world’s third largest export category, earning USD 1.3 trillion in receipts in 2017: an increase of five per cent.
ii. Total exports from international tourism was USD 1.6 trillion, or an average of USD 4 billion a day.
iii. For India, it grew from 22.42 billion dollars in 2016 to 27.36 billion dollars in 2017.
iv. Europe and Africa had a growth of 8 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively.
v. Over all international tourist arrivals grew 6.8% in 2017, the highest increase since the 2009.
vi. The top 7 destination are:
China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

ICICI banks hiked MCLR after SBI by 15 basis points
On September 1, 2018, ICICI increased its benchmark lending rates or MCLR by 0.15 percent.
i. This changes are effective from September 1, 2018.
ii. This made home, auto and other loans would become costlier.
iii. It comes after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hiked benchmark lending rate called repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.5 percent.
iv. The changed rates are as follows:

Justice Tahira Safdar : first woman Chief Justice of  Balochistan high court of Pakistan
On September 2, 2018, Justice Tahira Safdar was sworn in as the first woman chief justice in Pakistan‘s Balochistan High Court.

ii. In 1982 when she became the first woman civil judge in Balochistan.
iii. She is currently a member of the three-judge special court conducting the trial of former President Pervez Musharraf.

Asian Games 2018
18th Asian Games concluded on September 2; India finishes with biggest ever medal tally of 69:

  • On 2ndSeptember 2018, Asian Games 2018 concluded. India achieved its highest ever medal tally at the Asian Games.
  • India won a total of 69 medals which comprises: 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals, and ranked 8th in the medals tally. China finished on top of the medal tally with 289 medals.
  • India has surpassed its previous highest tally of 65 medals achieved at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Also, India has matched the gold medal tally from the first-ever Asian Games in 1951.
  • Overall 465 gold medals were won by the athletes of 28 countries. 37 out of 45 participating nations have won medals at the Asian Games 2018.

World coconut day – September 2
On 2nd September 2018, World coconut day was celebrated all over the world.
World coconut day 2018:
i. World Coconut Day is celebrated every year on 2nd September. It was established in 2009 to commemorate the formation day of Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC).
ii. This day highlights the importance and uses of coconuts. In India, World Coconut Day is celebrated with the guidance of Coconut Development Board in several coconut growing states.
iii. On 2nd September 2018, Coconut Development Board celebrated the World Coconut Day 2018 along with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Chhattisgarh with the theme ‘Coconut for Good Health, Wealth & Wellness’.
iv. The event was held at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. It was inaugurated by Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare.
v. Brijmohan Agrawal, Agriculture Minister, Chhattisgarh, presided over the function. Nearly 500 farmers from all coconut growing States participated.
