We will continue our discussion on ‘Mastering Parajumbles’ in this session. A number of small but very important things have been discussed in today’s session. So, even if you have got the answer right, do check the explanation provided.

Now we continue the session right from where we left it yesterday:-
Q1: Sentences 1 and 6 are fixed. A, B , C and D need to be aligned to make a coherent and meaningful paragraph. To what does ‘This one’ in C refer to? What sentence should come before C? What sentence will precede 6?
1.Our house is high up on the Yorkshire coast and close to the sea.
A.One is called the North spit and another the South.
B.The sand hills here run down to the sea and end in two stretches of rock, sticking out opposite to each other.
C.This one leads through a dark plantation of fir-trees and brings you out between low cliffs to the loneliest and ugliest little bay on all our coasts.
D.There are beautiful walls all around us in every direction except one.
6 .Between the two, shifting backwards and forwards at certain seasons of the year, lies the most horrible quicksand on the shores of Yorkshire.
Explanation:
To what does ‘This one’ in C refer to? What sentence should come before C?
D must precede C. D ends with ‘every direction except one’. ‘This one’ refers to the direction being talked of in D. Also notice, how sentence C begins right from the point where D finishes.
What sentence will precede 6?
6 begins with ‘between the two’. Now in all the sentences A, B ,C and D only sentence A has two things – North spit and South spit. Hence, ‘the two’ refers to ‘North and South spit’, so A must precede 6.
From the given analogy, we get DC as a pair and A6 as a pair. Answer could either be 1BDCA6 or 1DCBA6. Again, B ends with ‘two stretches of rock sticking out opposite to each other’, these two stretches have been defined in A – north spit and south spit, hence BA will form another pair and our answer will be DCBA.
Just see, how smoothly we have arrived at the answer, just by finding the right pairs. In PJs all the information is contained in the question itself, we just have to find the relation between them. There is no trick to solving these questions but just close reading helps.
Q2: Which sentence should come before C? (hint – ‘study them’)
Which sentence should come before F? (hint – ‘this justificatuon’)
A.There is ample justification for the phenomenon of the description.
B.In the present era also, efforts are being made to rejuvenate Pali.
C.A curious researcher can study them provided he has mastery over Pali language.
D.The Indian tradition describes Buddha as an advocate of analytical method.
E.Pali was perhaps the most commonly used language in those days.
F.This justification is found in several discourses.
Explanation:
Which sentence should come before C? (hint – ‘study them’)
Ask yourself what can be studied? – Reports or books or journals etc. Only plural noun in the sentences in ‘discourses’, hence the pair FC.
Which sentence should come before F? (hint – ‘this justification’)
F uses pronoun ‘this’, it says ‘this justification’. It is easy to see that preceding sentence must be A where word ‘justification’ has been used. Hence the pair AF.
Combining the two, we get AFC.
Another clear hint in the question is use of connector ‘also’ in B. It says ‘in the present era (time) also’. Hence the preceding sentence must be related to some foregone or past time, like ‘In the past Pali was……..’.
(Consider this example : ‘I have a bike also’ – preceding sentence must be ‘I have a car’. I have a car. I have a bike also)
Similarly, in the question – Pali was most common in those days. In the present time also…….
Hence the pair EB.
Arriving at the answer : We have EB& AFC. AmongE , A and D , one must be our starting sentence.Only D qualifies as the starting sentence. D uses word ‘describe’ and A builds upon the ‘description’ given in D (read both the sentences).
Using this analogy, we arrive at the answer: DAFCEB
Important – Always keep an eye on the words which are repeated, they sometimes act as big clue.
Q3: Which sentence should come before E? (hint – ‘behind them’)
Pronouns ‘she’ and ‘her’ used in B and C, refer to whom? Which sentence should come before B and C?
A.”What a waste of my tax money”, I thought, walking past the people having free Californian Chardonnay.
B.”Speak to her”, he said, “She’s into books”.
C.The friend who had brought me there noticed my noticing her.
D.In late 2003, I was still paying taxes in America, so it horrified me that the US Consulate was hosting a “Gallo drinking appreciation event”.
E.Behind them, a pianist was playing old film tunes, and a slim short woman was dancing around him.
Explanation:
Which sentence should come before E? (hint – ‘behind them’)
‘Them’ is used as a plural pronoun, it refers to ‘people having free……’ in A, hence the pair AE.
Pronouns ‘she’ and ‘her’ used in B and C, refer to whom? Which sentence should come before B and C?
‘She’ and ‘her’ obviously must refer to some female. Sentence E introduces ‘short slim woman’, hence B and C must come after E. Also, it is purely logical that order of B and C will be CB (first my friend notices that I am watching that girl and then he comes to me and says ‘go speak to her’), hence ECB.
Combining the two ECB + AE, we have AECB; D will eventually be our first sentence. Hence the answer DAECB.
Question – What does the phrase ‘she is into books’ mean?
Q4: Try solving this PJ by making pairs. Lot of hints have been given – B, E, F, and G all contain pronoun or connectors. Try forming pairs and you will arrive at the answer.
A.It is obvious from the above that the Commission has accorded highest priority to securing speedy justice to women.
B.These members continue to pursue their mandated activities, namely review of legislation, intervention in specific individual complaints of atrocities and denial of rights.
C.The functions assigned to the Commission, as per the act, are wide and varied covering almost all facts of issues relating to safeguarding women’s rights and promotion.
D.The National Commission for women was set up on 31st January, 1992 in pursuance of the National Commission for Women, Act 1990.
E.Towards this end of speedy justice to women, the Commission is organizing Parivarik Mahila Lok Adalats offering counseling in family disputes and conducting training programmes for creating legal awareness among women.
F.They also suggest remedial action to safeguard the interest of women to the appropriate authorities.
G.To carry out these functions the Commission has a Chairman, five members and a Member Secretary, all nominated by the Central Government.
Explanation:
Hint 1 – ‘these functions’ in G. Functions have been defined in C, hence the pair CG
Hint 2 – ‘these members’ in B. Members have been described in G, hence the pair GB
Hint 3 – ‘they also’ in F. ‘they’ refers to ‘members’. Functions to be performed by members have been given in B. Another function of the members has been given in F (that is why the use of ‘also’). We get pair BF
Hint 4 – ‘this speedy justice to women’ given in E. E continues from the same point where A ends. Hence AE. (Remember, we discussed to keep an eye on the words which are repeated, in this case ‘speedy justice’).
D should obviously be our first sentence.
Combining all these, we arrive at the answer – DCGBFAE
What we learn from this PJ, is not to get intimidated by the length of the question. Just stick to the basic and use the two most powerful friends of ours – ‘pronouns’ and ‘connectors’.
Q5: Try solving this PJ. It won’t require forming of any pairs. The ones with good reading skills will crack should crack it in one go. It’s a story based passage, try finding the starting sentence and then chain them up one after another. Don’t make pairs.
A.A few minutes later he was hauled back on board the ship, on the captain’s orders.
B.One of the crew began to complain and moan about the situation and no one could silence him.
C.Marvelling at the change, the passengers asked for an explanation, to which the captain replied, “We never appreciate how well off we are in a situation until we fall into a worse one”.
D.During a voyage a great storm arose.
E.In exasperation, the captain ordered him to be thrown overboard.
F.To everyone’s surprise, the man immediately went back to his post and silently began to work.
Explanation:
This type of question normally appears in Clerk examination. They describe an incident or a story. The key to solving these questions is by finding the sentences one after another. Answer:- DBEAFC.
D – storm arises
B – one of the crew begins complaining
E – captain gets angry and throws him from the ship
A – Later that person is hauled back to the ship
F – the person goes silently to his work
C – Surprised at this change in behavior of the person, passengers demand explanation and captain provides it.
Chhoti par Moti baatein – C talks of ‘the change’. Article ‘the’ is used when we refer to some particular thing or place etc which has already been described before. (I went to Delhi. The city was polluted – here ‘the city’ refers to Delhi).
Similarly, there must be some ‘change’ described before for which article ‘the’ is used. Use these small hints to your advantage.
Many of the students have posted wrong answer to this question, which is sad to see as getting such a question wrong only shows lack of reading habit. Without reading, you cannot get command over English, no matter how many rules you learn.
Before leaving, one Brainstormer for the intellectual ones
Question 6 :
A.While the government may take heart from the higher growth projection, it must pay equal heed to Mr. Patel’s plainspeak on some issues.
B.Third, while banks have reduced lending rates, the RBI has pointed out there is room for more cuts if rates on small savings schemes are corrected.
C.First, the need to urgently resolve the surge of bad loans on bank books, for which the RBI will unveil a new Prompt Corrective Action framework by the middle of this month.
